WORLD MUSIC DAY (2023)

I am an ardent fan of Music. Any kind and any language. For me a musical beat is what helps my heart, beat. If you get high by any other means... then tuning into music is what gets me high. When I tune into something and if that song awakens a dormant part of my heart then I listen to that song on loop till the song and every single of its highs and lows are fused in me. Then no matter what part of the day and from where I listen to the song I know where it’s going and how it has to be heard.

I am happy to share my recent loopers. Yes, that’s how I call it.

1. Left Right by Ali Sethi, Abdullah Siddiqui, Maanu, Shae Gill (English, Hindi, Urdu & Punjabi)

Hailing from Pakistan, Ali Sethi is not just a singer, songwriter, composer but also an author to the book ‘The Wish Maker’ which has often been compared to Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner. It’s raining talent for him and he is on my routine listening. Thank you Ali Sethi for your music. And ofcourse he is accompanied by some of the latest favourites in the Pakistani Music Industry.

2. Sang Rahiyo by Jasleen Royal, Ranveer Allahbadia, Ujjwal Kashyap (Hindi)

Yup, just as the song says so... I am with you and you be with me as well. I love when singers come together to make one song. It’s like bringing the best beads and stringing them together into a beautiful chain.

3. Parudeesa by Sreenath Bhasi, Sushin Shyam from the film Bheeshma Parvam (Malayalam)

I accidentally bumped into the song but then I could not get enough of it. It was on loop for couple of days for me. Also, cause I was surprised that actor Sreenath Bhasi sung it himself. I am ofcourse late to find out that he started off as an RJ in Red Fm, is/was part of the Christian alternative metal band named Crimson Wood and also is/been a vocalist of an experimental djent band from Kerala. R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

4. Kana Yaari by Kaifi, Eva B, Wahab Bugti (Balochi)

Though this audio does the magic by itself apparently it also got famous cause of the dance video attached to it later. For me the song was enough. I saw this video right now for the first time as I am writing this.

5. Kho Jaane De by Vishal Mishra (Hindi)

Turned down, or opted out of singing talent show, this boy didn’t stop and thank God for that. This is a song which allows you to have a beautiful Contemporary Dance choreography on it. I have it in my head and the song in my heart… on loop.

6. Sunn Bhavara by Shashaa Tirupati from the film OK Jaanu (Hindi)

Yes, a typically strange track to be seen here you would say. But this is a song I start with when I start or wish to start my day in ZEN mode. Ofcourse when you think of this film, you may think of various other tracks but this is my favourite. As for the others, nothing can beat the original from OK Kanmani. That album had saved me… literally!

7. Udja by OAFF, Savera, Jasleen Royal, Burrah (Hindi)

For me, to stop listening to this on loop I believe there had to be a Divine intervention or definitely another song. It was difficult for me to get away from this song from the first time I heard it. Damn it, to write my next favourite I have to stop listening to this. Maybe for the time being.

8. Oh Oh - The First love of Tamizh by Anirudh Ravichander, Dhanush & Nikita Gandhi from the film Thangamagan (Tamizh)

Don’t ask why, but I could not get enough of this song. It has a very beautiful Broadway feel and it’s so happy throughout and fun. This is my go to song when I am in a fun mood or want to be.

9. Sirivennela by Anurag Kulkarni | Mickey J. Meyer from the film Shyam Singha Roy (Telugu)

Ofcourse, I watched the film first and who wouldn’t if it starred Sai Palalvi & Nani. I am not a fan of the film but I was a fan of Nani (later discovered he is the Makkhi from the film Makhkhi!) and all mallus know Sai Pallavi only as Mallar even when she is NOT a mallu. But this song had something in it. The half-blood classical dancer in me would love to perform on this. Someday, one day…

10. Closer by Khanvict (Punjabi)

I won’t say anything for this one. Cause I can’t explain it. This song will always be a silent warrior within me.

11. Go by Abdullah Siddiqui & Atif Aslam (English & Urdu)

Hai Hai Hai. I love this song for its style, arrangement for its desi-pun to western punna.

12. Zakir by Naalayak (Hindi)

Let’s say, I let my playlist play in random order and I come to this song... I have NEVER been able to skip this one. I feel it's a sin to skip this one. A true looper and an all-time non-skipper.

13. Khoj (Passing By) by When Chai Met Toast (English, Tamizh & Hindi)

They aren’t New at all to people tuning into music regularly but if you still don’t know who they are the, it's HIGH time you follow them. Follow them to the end of the road because you will need them at every step of the way.

So these are my 13 songs for this World Music Day. I know 13 isn’t a favourite number for any but it is for me 😊 They aren’t in a particular order or of a particular kind or language or genre… but when did anyone listen to Music for all of those reasons. I think music blurs all borders and speaks straight to the heart. A very happy World Music Day… every day... to me and to people like me.
